Working With Quotes

News Writing and Reporting
Quotes: Assignment No. 2

This assignment seems simple, but it’s harder than it looks. The idea is to get you looking closely at quotes and to work on your accuracy. You will need two pieces of paper to complete the assignment. On the first piece of paper, do the following:

1) Define each of the following terms and then 2) find two of each type of quote in a newspaper from a news story (that is, from the news section of the paper. not sports or lifestyle or other sections.) in either the Daily Breeze or the Los Angeles Times or the Union. Once you find your examples, you will then copy those quotes onto your homework exactly, simply by typing the quote, word for word, from the paper, attribution and all.

            a.    a direct quote
            b.    a partial quote
            c.    an indirect quote

On the second piece of paper, you will attach the quotes that you copied above. You do this by cutting the quote out and attaching it to the page using glue, tape or staples.

So when you are finished you will have two pieces of paper that are stapled together. The first piece of paper will have the definitions and the six quotes (with attributions) copied exactly (typed by you) word for word from the original source. The second piece of paper will have the actual quotes that have been cut out of the paper and attached to the page. Please do not use the online version of the paper. Use an actual newspaper.

Remember that all work must be typed using Times New Roman 12-point font and double-spaced and adhere to MLA formatting guidelines.
